The Virtues of Sha'ban: Preparing Your Heart for Ramadan

Many Muslims leap from Rajab straight to Ramadan — yet between them lies a month of immense spiritual opportunity. The Prophet ﷺ honoured Sha’ban more than any other voluntary month.

Why Sha'ban Is Often Overlooked

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: “The Prophet ﷺ used to fast so much in Sha’ban that I would say he intends to fast the whole month.” This was not coincidence — it was a deliberate elevation of a month that falls between two celebrated months.

Usamah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) once asked the Prophet ﷺ why he fasted so often in Sha’ban. He ﷺ replied that it is a month “to which people are heedless, between Rajab and Ramadan.”

The Significance of Deeds Being Raised

One of the most profound aspects of Sha’ban is that our annual deeds are presented before Allah during this month. Scholars have explained that the Laylatul Nisf (the 15th night of Sha’ban) holds particular merit, though care must be taken to distinguish authentic reports from weak ones.

ℹ️   Scholarly Note

The 15th of Sha'ban is a matter of scholarly difference. Some scholars, including Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali, considered staying up for worship on this night to be recommended. The safest approach is to increase general worship — fasting, Quran, and supplication — without innovating specific rites.

Three Practical Actions This Sha'ban

1. Increase Voluntary Fasting

The Sunnah of Monday and Thursday fasting is especially rewarding in Sha’ban. If you have any missed Ramadan fasts (qada’), this is the ideal time to make them up, as Aisha (RA) herself would do so before the next Ramadan arrived.

2. Connect Deeply with the Quran

The early Muslims would refer to Sha’ban as “the month of the Qur’an readers.” They would complete their recitation, revise what they had memorised, and prepare for the intensive reading of Ramadan. Even one extra page per day creates meaningful momentum.

“Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will receive one good deed as ten. I do not say that Alif Lam Mim is one letter, but rather Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter, and Mim is a letter.”

3. Make Abundant Supplication

Ask Allah to allow you to reach Ramadan in good health and iman. The companions would make du’a six months in advance: “O Allah, allow us to reach Ramadan.” We are still in time.

  • Fast every Monday & Thursday for the remaining days of Sha'ban
  • Set a daily Quran recitation goal and track it — even 10 minutes counts
  • Learn or revise the duas for entering and leaving Ramadan
  • Make your Ramadan intention clear — write it down and revisit it
  • Reduce screen time gradually so the soul is ready for intensive worship

A Month for the Heart

Sha’ban is a month of preparation — not performance. No one is watching the leaderboard. It is a private conversation between you and your Lord, a quiet cultivating of the soil before the great planting season of Ramadan.

May Allah allow us to witness Ramadan with sound hearts, sincere intentions, and the strength to worship as He deserves.

Prophet Lut (AS) and the People of Sodom: A Warning Against Unnatural Sin

📣 The Call of Lut (AS): “Fear Allah and Obey Me”

Prophet Lut (AS) was the nephew and follower of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). When Ibrahim (AS) was commanded by Allah to migrate, Lut (AS) went with him and believed in his message. Then Allah honored Lut (AS) by making him a Prophet and sending him to a wicked nation – the people of Sodom (in the region of the Dead Sea, modern-day Palestine/Jordan border).

These people were infamous for one major sin: homosexuality. They were the first nation in history to commit this act so openly and shamelessly. They also robbed travelers, committed evil openly in their gatherings, and rejected all guidance.

Lut (AS) came to them with the same message as every Prophet:

Surah Ash-Shu’ara (26:161-163)

Translation: “When their brother Lut said to them, ‘Will you not fear Allah? Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. So fear Allah and obey me.'”

He reminded them of the natural order Allah created – men and women pairing together for marriage. He called them to leave their evil ways and turn back to Allah.

Surah Al-A’raf (7:80-81)

Translation: “And [We sent] Lut when he said to his people, ‘Do you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds? Indeed, you approach men with desire instead of women. Rather, you are a transgressing people.'”

💢 The Arrogant Response: “Expel Them from Your City!”

The people of Sodom did not listen. Instead of being ashamed, they became more arrogant. They mocked Lut (AS) and threatened to expel him and his followers.

Surah Al-A’raf (7:82)

Translation: “And the answer of his people was only that they said, ‘Expel them from your city! Indeed, they are men who keep themselves pure!'”

They mocked him for being “pure” – meaning they saw his righteousness as a crime. This shows how twisted their minds had become. They called evil good and good evil.

👼 The Arrival of the Angels

Allah decided to punish the people of Sodom. He sent angels to Lut (AS) to deliver the news. First, these angels visited Ibrahim (AS) as guests and gave him glad tidings of a son (Ishaq). Then they left to go to Lut (AS).

When the angels arrived in Sodom, they appeared as beautiful young men. Lut (AS) did not know they were angels. He became very worried because he knew his people would try to attack them.

Surah Hud (11:77)

Translation: “And when Our messengers came to Lut, he was anguished for them and felt for them great distress and said, ‘This is a difficult day.'”

Lut (AS) tried to protect the angels. He offered his daughters in marriage to the men (as a lawful alternative), but they refused. They demanded the male guests.

Surah Hud (11:78)

Translation: “And his people came hastening to him, and before [this] they had been doing evil deeds. He said, ‘O my people, these are my daughters; they are purer for you. So fear Allah and do not disgrace me concerning my guests. Is there not among you a man of reason?'”

⚡ The Warning and the Punishment

The angels then revealed their true identity to Lut (AS). They told him:

Surah Hud (11:81)

Translation: “They said, ‘O Lut, indeed we are messengers of your Lord; [they] will never reach you. So set out with your family during a portion of the night and let not any among you look back – except your wife; indeed, she will be struck by that which strikes them. Indeed, their appointment is [at] the morning. Is not the morning near?'”

Lut (AS) left the city at night with his followers – except his wife. She was a disbeliever and had sided with the wicked people. She stayed behind.

🌋 The Destruction: The City Turned Upside Down

At dawn, the punishment came. The angel Jibreel (AS) raised the entire city into the sky and then flipped it upside down and slammed it back to earth. Then Allah rained down stones of baked clay (Sijjeel) upon them.

Surah Hud (11:82-83)

Translation: “So when Our command came, We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of layered baked clay, marked from your Lord. And they are not far from the wrongdoers.”

Surah Al-Qamar (54:34)

Translation: “Indeed, We sent upon them a storm of stones – except the family of Lut; We saved them before dawn.”

The area was completely destroyed. Today, the Dead Sea (in Palestine/Jordan) marks the location where this happened. The water is so salty that nothing can live in it – a lasting sign of Allah’s punishment.

🌟 The Legacy of Lut (AS)

Prophet Lut (AS) and his followers were saved. He migrated and lived out his life in safety. His wife was destroyed with the disbelievers because of her betrayal.

Surah At-Tahrim (66:10)

Translation: “Allah presents an example for those who disbelieved: the wife of Nuh and the wife of Lut. They were under two of Our righteous servants but betrayed them, so those prophets did not avail them from Allah at all, and it was said, ‘Enter the Fire with those who enter.'”

The story of Lut (AS) is a severe warning against:

  • Homosexuality – as a major, unnatural sin

  • Openly committing evil without shame

  • Rejecting prophets and mocking the righteous

  • Betraying one’s family by siding with falsehood
