Prophet Hud (AS) and the People of ‘Ad: The Arrogant Builders Who Were Erased by a Wind
📣 The Call of Hud (AS): “Fear Allah and Obey Me”
After the great flood of Prophet Nuh (AS), humanity repopulated the earth. Among the descendants of Sam (Shem), the son of Nuh, arose a mighty tribe known as ‘Ad .
Allah had blessed them abundantly. They were given:
Enormous physical stature – They were giants, strong and formidable
Advanced civilization – They built towering structures with tall pillars (Iram dhāt al-‘imād), the likes of which had never been seen in the land
Fertile lands – They lived in Al-Ahqaf (the winding sand dunes), which had oases, gardens, and flowing water
But with this power came great arrogance. They forgot the One who gave them everything. They built high palaces and monuments not to worship Allah, but to boast and challenge Him. They became tyrants, oppressing the weak and worshipping idols.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara (26:128-129)
Translation: “Do you build on every elevation a sign, amusing yourselves, and take for yourselves palaces and fortresses that you might abide eternally?”
Allah, in His infinite mercy, sent to the ‘Ad a man from among them: Hud (AS) . He was known for his truthfulness, wisdom, and noble lineage. He came to them not with personal ambition, but with a desperate plea for their salvation.
He delivered the core message of all Prophets:
🤲 Verse 1: Worship Allah Alone
Surah Hud (11:50)
Translation: “And to ‘Ad [We sent] their brother Hud. He said, ‘O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. You are not but inventors [of falsehood].'”
🤲 Verse 2: I Seek No Reward
Surah Ash-Shu’ara (26:127)
Translation: “And I do not ask you for it any payment. My reward is only from the Lord of the worlds.”
🤲 Verse 3: Remember Allah’s Blessings
Surah Hud (11:52)
Translation: “And O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers and increase you in strength added to your strength. And do not turn away, [being] criminals.”
💢 The Arrogant Response: “Who is Stronger Than Us?”
The chiefs of ‘Ad did not listen. They mocked Hud (AS) and accused him of being a fool.
Their pride was their destruction. They looked at their physical strength, their towering buildings, and their wealth, and they asked:
Surah Fussilat (41:15)
Translation: “As for ‘Ad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, ‘Who is greater than us in strength?’ Did they not see that Allah, who created them, was greater than them in strength? But they were rejecting Our signs.”
They challenged Hud (AS) to bring the punishment if he was truthful:
Surah Al-Ahqaf (46:22)
Translation: “They said, ‘Have you come to delude us away from our gods? Then bring us what you promise us, if you should be of the truthful.'”
⚡ The Three-Year Drought: A Final Warning
When they persisted in disbelief, Allah withheld the rain. For three years, not a single drop fell from the sky. The gardens died, the rivers dried, and the giant people of ‘Ad began to starve.
Instead of repenting, they sent a delegation to Mecca to pray for rain at their idols. On their journey, they saw a cloud formation (three clouds: white, red, and black). A voice from the cloud offered them a choice. The arrogant leader chose the black cloud, thinking it carried the most water.
It did carry water. But it also carried the wrath of Allah.
🌪️ The Punishment: The Howling Wind
The black cloud descended upon the valley of Al-Ahqaf. From it emerged a screaming, violent wind. This was no ordinary storm.
The Quran describes it with terrifying precision:
Surah Al-Haaqqa (69:6-7)
Translation: “And as for ‘Ad, they were destroyed by a screaming, violent wind which Allah imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees.”
The Details of the Destruction:
It was freezing cold: The word Sarsar means a wind that is intensely cold and makes a whistling/screaming sound.
It was relentless: ‘Ateeh means fierce, tyrannical, and destructive beyond measure.
It was continuous: Husuman (in succession) means it did not stop for a single moment for 8 days and 7 nights.
The physical effect: It entered their bodies through their ears and nostrils, cutting them to pieces. The mighty giants were thrown to the ground like uprooted palm trunks.
When Hud (AS) and the believers saw the cloud approaching, they were afraid. But Hud (AS) told them: “It is not rain. It is the destruction you were promised.”
Only Hud (AS) and his followers were saved by Allah’s mercy. They left the land and migrated to Hadramawt (in modern Yemen), where Hud (AS) lived until his natural death.
🌟 The Legacy of Hud (AS)
The land of ‘Ad was erased. Their tall pillars fell. Their palaces became empty, haunting ruins in the sands of Al-Ahqaf (the Empty Quarter of Arabia).
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) would seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of ‘Ad. In a famous dua, he said:
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hellfire, and from the punishment of the grave, and from the trial of Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal, and from the trial of life and death.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
