01 Β· Background
What is Eid ul Adha?
Eid ul Adha β the Festival of Sacrifice β falls on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar. It is one of only two Eids in Islam, and many scholars consider it the greater of the two. It marks the culmination of Hajj β the annual pilgrimage to Makkah β and commemorates one of the greatest acts of submission in all of prophetic history.
The story begins with Ibrahim ΨΉΩΩΩ Ψ§ΩΨ³ΩΨ§Ω
β Khalilullah, the Friend of Allah β who received a command in a dream to sacrifice his son Ismail ΨΉΩΩΩ Ψ§ΩΨ³ΩΨ§Ω
. He told his son. Ismail, without hesitation, said: "Do what you have been commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, to be of the patient." Father and son together submitted completely to the will of Allah. And just as Ibrahim raised the knife, Allah called out to him β the sacrifice had been accepted, a great sacrifice was sent in the son's place, and Ibrahim had passed the greatest test a father could face.

"And when he reached with him the age of striving, he said: O my son, I have seen in a dream that I sacrifice you β so see what you think. He said: O my father, do what you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, to be of the patient."
Surah As-Saffat 37:102
Every year on Eid ul Adha, the Muslim ummah re-lives this act of submission. We pray the Eid prayer. We give Qurbani β slaughtering an animal as Ibrahim did. We share the meat with family, neighbours and the poor. We remember that everything we have belongs to Allah, and we are willing to give it back if He asks.
π
When is it?
The 10th of Dhul Hijjah every year. Eid ul Adha 1447 falls on approximately 27 June 2026 in the UK, subject to moon sighting.
π
Connected to Hajj
Eid ul Adha coincides with the climax of Hajj. On this day, pilgrims in Makkah complete their Tawaf, sacrifice their animals, and shave their heads.
π
1.8 Billion Muslims
On this single day, Muslims across the entire world β from the UK to Bangladesh to Nigeria β perform Eid prayer and Qurbani together.
π
The Qurbani
The sacrifice of an animal β sheep, goat, cow or camel β is obligatory for every Muslim who meets the nisab threshold. The meat is divided in thirds.
02 Β· The Sacred Days
The First Ten Days of Dhul Hijjah
Before Eid ul Adha comes something equally important β the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah. The Prophet ο·Ί said these are the greatest days of the entire year β greater even than the days of Ramadan for good deeds.
"There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days." The companions asked: "Not even jihad in the path of Allah?" He said: "Not even jihad in the path of Allah β except for a man who goes out with his life and his wealth and comes back with nothing."
Sahih Bukhari 969 Β· Ibn Abbas Ψ±ΨΆΩ Ψ§ΩΩΩ ΨΉΩΩ
These ten days include the Day of Arafah β the greatest day of the year β and culminate in Eid ul Adha on the 10th. Here is what to do in each of these days:
1β8
Days One to Eight β Maximum Ibadah
Increase all acts of worship β more Quran, more dhikr, more prayer, more sadaqah. The Prophet ο·Ί would fast the first nine days of Dhul Hijjah. Do not cut your hair or nails if you intend to give Qurbani β this is a sunnah from when you enter the month.
9
The Day of Arafah β Greatest Day of the Year
Fast this day if you are not performing Hajj. The Prophet ο·Ί said it expiates sins of the previous year and the coming year (Sahih Muslim 1162). Make abundant dua β "The best dua is the dua of the Day of Arafah" (Tirmidhi 3585). Start the Takbeer of Eid from Fajr of this day.
10
Eid ul Adha β The Day of Sacrifice
Do not fast today β it is haram to fast on Eid. Perform the Eid prayer. Give Qurbani after the prayer. Share the meat. Visit family. Make takbeer throughout the day.
11β13
The Days of Tashreeq
The three days following Eid are called Ayyam al-Tashreeq. Qurbani can also be performed on these days. Continue the Takbeer. It is also haram to fast on these days.

03 Β· The Fifth Pillar
The Importance of Hajj
Hajj β the pilgrimage to Makkah β is the fifth and final pillar of Islam. It is obligatory once in a lifetime for every Muslim who is physically able and financially capable. On Eid ul Adha, while the rest of the world celebrates, approximately 2 million pilgrims are completing the greatest journey of their lives in Makkah and its surroundings.

"And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House β for whoever is able to find thereto a way."
Surah Al-Imran 3:97
π
Complete Forgiveness
The Prophet ο·Ί said: "Whoever performs Hajj and does not commit any obscenity or sin returns like the day his mother gave birth to him." (Sahih Bukhari 1521)
π
The Ummah United
Hajj is the largest annual gathering of human beings on earth. Every race, every nationality, every language β all in the same white garments, all facing the same Kaabah.
π€²
The Accepted Hajj
"The reward for an accepted Hajj is nothing but Paradise." (Sahih Bukhari 1773) β An accepted Hajj is one performed with sincerity, avoiding sin and argument.
πΏ
When It Becomes Obligatory
Hajj is obligatory when you are: Muslim, sane, adult, free, physically able to travel, and financially able β meaning you have the cost of Hajj above your basic needs and debts.
"Islam is built upon five pillars: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, paying Zakat, performing Hajj, and fasting Ramadan."
Sahih Bukhari 8 Β· Sahih Muslim 16
If you have not yet performed Hajj and are able to β make the intention today. The Prophet ο·Ί said: "Hasten to perform Hajj β for none of you knows what may happen to him." (Ahmad 2867 Β· Sahih) Do not delay what Allah has made obligatory.
04 Β· The Sacrifice
Qurbani β Everything You Need to Know
Qurbani is the sacrifice of a livestock animal performed between Eid prayer on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah and sunset on the 13th (the last day of Tashreeq). It is wajib (obligatory) according to the Hanafi school and sunnah mu'akkadah (strongly emphasised sunnah) according to the majority β for every Muslim who possesses wealth above the nisab threshold.
"Whoever has the ability to offer a sacrifice but does not do so, let him not approach our musalla." (Sunan Ibn Majah 3123 Β· Authenticated by Al-Hakim)
Ibn Majah 3123 Β· The severity of this warning shows its importance
Who Must Give Qurbani?
- Every Muslim who is adult, sane, and resident (not a traveller)
- Who possesses wealth above the nisab threshold β approximately the value of 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver above basic needs and debts
- One Qurbani is sufficient per household (Hanafi) though it is better for each adult to give separately
- A cow or camel can be shared by up to 7 people β each share counts as one Qurbani
Which Animals Are Valid?
- Sheep or goat β must be at least 1 year old (or 6 months if a large healthy sheep)
- Cow or buffalo β must be at least 2 years old Β· counts for up to 7 people
- Camel β must be at least 5 years old Β· counts for up to 7 people

For UK Muslims
- If you cannot perform the sacrifice yourself, you can authorise a butcher or charity to do it on your behalf
- Many UK Muslims give Qurbani overseas through charities β this is valid, and the meat reaches those who need it most in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Syria etc
- If giving overseas, it is still sunnah to not cut hair or nails from the 1st of Dhul Hijjah until your Qurbani is complete
- You cannot sell the Qurbani animal or its skin for personal benefit β it must be given as sadaqah
05 Β· The Prayer
The Eid Prayer β Step by Step
The Eid prayer is wajib (obligatory) according to the Hanafi school and sunnah mu'akkadah according to others. It is prayed in congregation, in an open field or large mosque, after sunrise and before midday. There is no adhan or iqamah for the Eid prayer.
What to Do on the Day of Eid
- Do NOT fast on Eid day β it is haram to fast on Eid ul Adha
- Perform ghusl (full ritual bath) before the prayer
- Wear your best clothes β ideally new clothes if possible
- Apply itr (perfume)
- Go to the Eid prayer via one route and return via another β this is sunnah
- Make takbeer on the way to the prayer ground
- Unlike Eid ul Fitr, do not eat before the Eid prayer β eat after the Qurbani
How to Pray the Eid Prayer
1
Make the Intention
Intend in your heart to pray two rakats of Eid ul Adha prayer with this imam, for the sake of Allah.
2
First Takbeer β Takbeer al-Tahrimah
Raise your hands and say "Allahu Akbar" β this opens the prayer. Fold your hands and read Thana (the opening supplication) quietly.
3
Three Extra Takbeers β First Rakat
Say "Allahu Akbar" three additional times, raising your hands each time and dropping them to your sides between takbeers. After the third, fold your hands. The imam then reads Surah Al-Fatiha and another Surah aloud.
4
Complete the First Rakat
Follow the imam through ruku and sujood as normal.
5
Three Extra Takbeers β Second Rakat
In the second rakat, after the Surah is read, say three additional takbeers before going into ruku. A fourth takbeer goes into ruku itself.
6
Complete the Prayer and Listen to the Khutbah
After the prayer, the imam delivers two khutbahs. Unlike Jummah, the Eid khutbah comes after the prayer, not before. It is sunnah to listen β though not obligatory to remain according to some scholars.
