Welcome to Islam

A warm, gentle guide for those who have taken the first step — or are thinking about it. You are not alone on this journey.

"Whoever submits himself to Allah while doing good has grasped the most trustworthy handhold."
Surah Luqman · 31:22
Where It All Begins

The Shahada — Declaration of Faith

The Shahada is the gateway into Islam. By sincerely saying these words with belief in your heart, you become a Muslim. It is the most powerful sentence in existence.

١
The First Shahada — Oneness of Allah
Ash-hadu an lā ilāha illallāh
I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah. This affirms Tawheed — the absolute oneness of God. Allah has no partners, no sons, no equals. He is One, Eternal, All-Knowing, All-Powerful.
٢
The Second Shahada — Prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ
Wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasūlullāh
And I bear witness that Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah. He is the final prophet, sent as a mercy to all of humanity. Following his example (the Sunnah) is how we live Islam in daily life.
❤️
What Happens When You Say the Shahada?
All previous sins are wiped clean — you begin fresh. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Islam wipes out whatever came before it." You are now part of the global Muslim community (Ummah). You don't need to change your name, your nationality, or your culture. Islam is for every people, every tongue, every land.
Important: The Shahada must be said with genuine belief in the heart, understanding of its meaning, and complete sincerity. It is recommended to say it in front of witnesses if possible, and to perform Ghusl (full body purification) afterwards.
"Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge."
Surah Al-Ikhlas · 112:1-2
Iman — Faith

The Six Articles of Faith

These are the six things every Muslim must believe in their heart. They form the foundation of Islamic faith (Aqeedah).

☝️
Belief in Allah
Believing in One God — Allah — who has no partners, no children, and no equals. He is the Creator and Sustainer of everything that exists.
👼
Belief in the Angels
Angels are created from light, always obey Allah, and carry out His commands. Jibreel (Gabriel) brought the Quran. Two angels record our deeds constantly.
📖
Belief in the Scriptures
Allah revealed books to His prophets — the Tawrah (Torah), Zabur (Psalms), Injeel (Gospel), and the Quran. The Quran is the final, preserved revelation.
🌟
Belief in the Prophets
Allah sent 124,000 prophets to guide humanity — from Adam to Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and finally Muhammad ﷺ as the seal of all prophets.
⚖️
Belief in the Day of Judgement
This world will end. Every soul will be resurrected and stand before Allah to account for every deed — large and small. Then comes eternal Paradise or Hellfire.
🌊
Belief in Divine Decree
Everything that happens — good and difficult — is within Allah's knowledge and plan. This brings peace: trust in Allah's wisdom even when we cannot understand it.
Islam in Practice

The Five Pillars of Islam

The five pillars are the practical acts of worship that structure a Muslim's daily and yearly life. They are obligatory for every adult Muslim.

☝️
Pillar 1
Shahada
The declaration of faith — "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger." Said with conviction, it is the entry point to Islam.
🕌
Pillar 2
Salah — Prayer
Five daily prayers at set times — Fajr (dawn), Dhuhr (midday), Asr (afternoon), Maghrib (sunset), Isha (night). Prayer is the direct connection between you and Allah.
💰
Pillar 3
Zakat — Charity
2.5% of accumulated savings given to those in need each year (if your wealth reaches the nisab threshold). It purifies wealth and strengthens community.
🌙
Pillar 4
Sawm — Fasting
Fasting from dawn to sunset throughout the month of Ramadan — abstaining from food, drink, and intimacy. A month of spiritual renewal and gratitude.
🕋
Pillar 5
الحج
Hajj — Pilgrimage
A once-in-a-lifetime journey to Makkah, obligatory for those who are physically and financially able. It unites Muslims from every nation in one act of worship.
Salah —

The Five Daily Prayers

Prayer is the pillar of the religion. Each prayer has a set number of units (Raka'at) and is performed at specific times throughout the day.

Fajr
Dawn · 2 Raka'at
Dhuhr
Midday · 4 Raka'at
العصر
Asr
Afternoon · 4 Raka'at
Maghrib
Sunset · 3 Raka'at
Isha
Night · 4 Raka'at
For New Muslims: Don't be overwhelmed. Start by learning Fajr (2 raka'at — the shortest). Pray with whatever Arabic you know, and Allah sees your sincere effort. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Pray as you have seen me pray." Use a prayer app or attend your local mosque — the community will help you learn.
Surah Al-Fatiha — The Opening Chapter
Recited in every unit of every prayer
Bismillāhir-rahmānir-rahīm · Al-hamdu lillāhi rabbil-ālamīn · Ar-rahmānir-rahīm · Māliki yawmid-dīn · Iyyāka na'budu wa iyyāka nasta'īn · Ihdinās-sirātal-mustaqīm · Sirātal-ladhīna an'amta 'alayhim ghayril-maghdūbi 'alayhim wa lad-dāllīn
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds — the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful — Master of the Day of Judgement. You alone we worship, You alone we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path — the path of those You have blessed, not of those who have earned anger, nor of those who are astray.
Purification —

Wudu — Ablution Before Prayer

Wudu is the ritual washing performed before prayer. It purifies the body and is an act of worship in itself. It is broken by using the toilet, passing wind, deep sleep, or bleeding.

1
Intention (Niyyah)Make the intention in your heart to perform Wudu for the sake of Allah.
2
Say BismillahSay "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah) before starting.
3
Wash Both HandsWash hands up to the wrists three times, making sure water reaches between fingers.
4
Rinse the MouthTake water into the mouth, swirl it around three times and spit it out.
5
Rinse the NoseSniff water into the nose and blow it out three times.
6
Wash the FaceWash the entire face — from hairline to chin, ear to ear — three times.
7
Wash Both ArmsWash arms from fingertips to elbows three times (right first, then left).
8
Wipe the HeadWet hands and wipe the entire head once — front to back and back to front.
9
Wipe the EarsUsing the same wet hands, wipe inside and behind the ears once.
10
Wash Both FeetWash feet up to and including the ankles three times (right first, then left). Water must reach between toes.
After Wudu, say:
"I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger." — The Prophet ﷺ said whoever says this, all 8 gates of Paradise open for them.
Remembrance —

Essential Daily Duas

Duas (supplications) are the weapon of the believer. These are the most important ones to learn — they transform everyday moments into acts of worship.

Starting anything — Bismillah
Bismillāhir-rahmānir-rahīm
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Say this before eating, drinking, driving, beginning any task.
When something good happens — Alhamdulillah
Alhamdulillāh
All praise belongs to Allah. Said in gratitude for every blessing — big or small. The Prophet ﷺ called it the best of all dhikr.
Waking up in the morning
Alhamdu lillāhil-ladhī ahyānā ba'da mā amātanā wa ilayhin-nushūr
All praise is for Allah who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection. (Said upon waking)
Before sleeping
Bismika Allāhumma amūtu wa ahyā
In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live. (Sleep is likened to a small death — we entrust ourselves to Allah each night)
Before eating
Bismillāhi wa 'alā barakatillāh
In the name of Allah and with the blessings of Allah. Said before every meal to make eating an act of worship.
After eating
Alhamdu lillāhil-ladhī at'amanā wa saqānā wa ja'alanā muslimīn
All praise to Allah who fed us, gave us drink, and made us Muslims.
When in difficulty — seeking help from Allah
Hasbiyallāhu lā ilāha illā huwa 'alayhi tawakkaltu wa huwa rabbul-'arshil-'azīm
Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god but Him. In Him I place my trust, for He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.
Asking for forgiveness — Istighfar
Astaghfirullāhal-'azīmal-ladhī lā ilāha illā huwal-hayyul-qayyūmu wa atūbu ilayh
I seek forgiveness from Allah the Magnificent — there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer — and I repent to Him. Say this often; Allah loves those who constantly repent.
"And when My servants ask you about Me — indeed I am near. I respond to the call of the one who calls upon Me."
Surah Al-Baqarah · 2:186
Islamic Lifestyle

Living a Halal Life

Islam is a complete way of life — not just rituals. Here are the key lifestyle principles every new Muslim should understand, without feeling overwhelmed.

🍖
Halal Food
Muslims eat meat slaughtered in the name of Allah (halal). Forbidden: pork and its by-products, alcohol, blood, and carnivorous animals. Look for halal certification on food packaging.
🚫
Avoiding Alcohol
Alcohol is completely prohibited in Islam — drinking, buying, selling or serving it. This may require some social adjustment, but it is a clear command that brings great blessings.
👗
Modest Dress (Hijab)
Both men and women are commanded to dress modestly. For women, this includes covering the hair and body. For men, covering from navel to knee at minimum. Modesty is a sign of honour, not restriction.
💕
Relationships & Marriage
Physical intimacy is reserved for marriage between a man and woman. Islam encourages early marriage and provides a complete framework for family life rooted in mercy and love.
💸
Avoiding Interest (Riba)
Charging or paying interest on loans is forbidden. This applies to conventional mortgages and loans. Islamic finance alternatives exist — seek guidance from a local scholar on your situation.
🤝
Character & Manners
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best of you are those with the best character." Honesty, kindness, generosity, patience, and good manners are as important as ritual worship in Islam.
Remember: You don't have to change everything overnight. Islam is built on ease, not hardship. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Make things easy, do not make them difficult." Take it one step at a time — consistency in small deeds is beloved to Allah.
