The Virtues of Sha'ban: Preparing Your Heart for Ramadan

Many Muslims leap from Rajab straight to Ramadan — yet between them lies a month of immense spiritual opportunity. The Prophet ﷺ honoured Sha’ban more than any other voluntary month.

Why Sha'ban Is Often Overlooked

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: “The Prophet ﷺ used to fast so much in Sha’ban that I would say he intends to fast the whole month.” This was not coincidence — it was a deliberate elevation of a month that falls between two celebrated months.

Usamah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) once asked the Prophet ﷺ why he fasted so often in Sha’ban. He ﷺ replied that it is a month “to which people are heedless, between Rajab and Ramadan.”

The Significance of Deeds Being Raised

One of the most profound aspects of Sha’ban is that our annual deeds are presented before Allah during this month. Scholars have explained that the Laylatul Nisf (the 15th night of Sha’ban) holds particular merit, though care must be taken to distinguish authentic reports from weak ones.

ℹ️   Scholarly Note

The 15th of Sha'ban is a matter of scholarly difference. Some scholars, including Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali, considered staying up for worship on this night to be recommended. The safest approach is to increase general worship — fasting, Quran, and supplication — without innovating specific rites.

Three Practical Actions This Sha'ban

1. Increase Voluntary Fasting

The Sunnah of Monday and Thursday fasting is especially rewarding in Sha’ban. If you have any missed Ramadan fasts (qada’), this is the ideal time to make them up, as Aisha (RA) herself would do so before the next Ramadan arrived.

2. Connect Deeply with the Quran

The early Muslims would refer to Sha’ban as “the month of the Qur’an readers.” They would complete their recitation, revise what they had memorised, and prepare for the intensive reading of Ramadan. Even one extra page per day creates meaningful momentum.

“Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will receive one good deed as ten. I do not say that Alif Lam Mim is one letter, but rather Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter, and Mim is a letter.”

3. Make Abundant Supplication

Ask Allah to allow you to reach Ramadan in good health and iman. The companions would make du’a six months in advance: “O Allah, allow us to reach Ramadan.” We are still in time.

  • Fast every Monday & Thursday for the remaining days of Sha'ban
  • Set a daily Quran recitation goal and track it — even 10 minutes counts
  • Learn or revise the duas for entering and leaving Ramadan
  • Make your Ramadan intention clear — write it down and revisit it
  • Reduce screen time gradually so the soul is ready for intensive worship

A Month for the Heart

Sha’ban is a month of preparation — not performance. No one is watching the leaderboard. It is a private conversation between you and your Lord, a quiet cultivating of the soil before the great planting season of Ramadan.

May Allah allow us to witness Ramadan with sound hearts, sincere intentions, and the strength to worship as He deserves.
